Is it actually healthy for babies to learn so fast and much from the TV?

A few years ago I saw a program that said that it was bad for infants and toddlers to go through the extreme amounts of "learning". One of the pediatricians that was interviewed said that he would rather have a toddler watching American Idol than Baby Einstein. That making the babies' brains develop so fast can be harmful and that interactions between parents and children is much healthier for brain development and is better for social skills than watching TV for their education.

Do you think this is true? Or were they just getting parents worried for the sake of getting them to worry?
