Is it a waste of money to go to an expensive university?

I want to major in Multimedia & communications and minor in Film. Is it a waste of money to go to an expensive 4 year school like NYU, Bard, or Emerson? Each cost about $40,000 a year not including room & board, books, etc. The only plus with NYU is I could live at home. Does anyone know of any cheaper schools in the NYC area that are strong in media & communications? thanks.
 
Look at it this way: I am studying mechanical engineering at the University of Puerto Rico. I pay about $1,400 for the year for everything I need. This university gives MIT and University of Washington a good race. And they pay over $30,000 a year for their education.
We learn the same thing. I wholeheartedly believe that they are getting the short end of the stick.
