Is it a good idea to travel in Europe by car?

I wanted to do a road trip and to visit several places in Wester Europe such as Slovakia, Austria, Czech Rep. Hungary, France, Italy, Spain etc.

Is it a good idea to travel by my own car or should I consider a different type of transportation ? (plane, train? )

You haven't mentioned any particular towns or cities you would wish to visit, and neither have you stated your start and finish points, which makes it more than a little difficult to give distances involved.
To give you some idea, a more or less 'straight line' journey between the countries you have mentioned (in order of Czech Rep. Slovakia, Hungary, Austria, Italy, France and Spain) would be in the region of 3,700 miles (5,900km.) and at 500 miles a day would take you over a week without stopping to look at anything.
If you do decide to use your own car, then as long as your car is not too old, and has been correctly maintained there is no reason why you shouldn't. The vast majority of European Motorways and other main roads are well maintained and should present no problems at all.
I do think that you need to spend quite a bit of time making even 'half plans' before setting out on your journey though. Oh yes! Also make sure you have a long enough holiday :o)
