Is it a fact the when processed food is involved artificial flavors are cheaper?

...than the real thing? As I look at the ingredients, if it says ______ flavor it means it's artificially flavored. Flavors range from chocolate to strawberry. What kind of chemistry makes it easier to "create" a flavor than getting the real thing?
