Is it a bad idea to buy a first car with a manual transmission?

I'm fairly new to driving, and someday I will get my own car. I keep hearing that driving manual is the true way to drive. You really get a feel for the car, the acceleration, going in and out through turns, etc.

But maybe I should stick with an automatic for now, because I shouldn't be multitasking by monitoring the clutch, but instead pay attention to the road, before I actually get a feel for what's expected.

My first cars were all manuals. You can still pay attention to the road while managing a clutch, it becomes second nature shortly after learning.

I think being able to drive a stick is a useful skill. If you spend a few days driving around on quiet streets and country roads, you'll quickly learn to shift well. After that, you'll be able to concentrate on traffic and the surroundings, while shifting will be an automatic response that you won't even think about.
