School starts in the beginning of January for me (college). I have about 3,800 saved up and I found a Honda Civic that I want to purchase. It has 146,000~ miles, and the the asking price was 2,500. I got him down to 2,000 because there's a quiet "bu-dunt, bu-dunt" noise coming from the front left tire, he says it's the wheel bearing and he even bought the part and showed me it. I called my mechanic and he said it'd cost $100 to install it. I live on my own (sort of - I live with my sisters husbands mom and I pay her rent because it's close to my university). I looked at the engine and it sounds fine, it starts right up, there's nothing noticeably wrong with it, it seems to be in decent shape. I'm just worried to actually buy it, as the miles are sort of high and I don't know what I'd do if it broke down on me during college. Regardless of anything, I'm going to need a car, and I'm going to need it within the next two weeks. $2,100 + insurance $200~ down payment? + tag/registration $70, that's $2,370.. I'll be left with about $1,430~ to live on until I find a job.. I just don't know if it's a good idea or not.
If I don't go through with it, I'm not sure if (for my price range) I'll find a car with the right amount of miles on it. What do you think? I think the question really comes down to: is a 1998 Honda Civic EX coupe with 146,000 miles reliable?
