Is Islam a threat to western civilization and democracy and a dangerous

religion? A recent poll said's 2/3 ye? I was in England for work and was watching the BBC and a recent opinion poll they did said that 2/3 of british people of all races, who are not muslims thought that Islam is a threat to Western civilization and Democracy.
I think Islam is dangerous.
Mohammed created Islam apparently so he justify and get people to help him, attack people in the desert.

I would say yes.....

“Our Word was given before to our slaves, the Messengers, that they would certainly be helped. It is our army which will be victorious.”- (Qur'an, 37: 171-173)

There is a deep and troubled history between Islam and Europe, with the Christians and the Ottoman Empire jostling each other for centuries and bloodily defining the boundaries of Christianity and Islam. A sense of guilt over Europe’s colonial past and then World War II, when intolerance exploded into mass murder, allowed a large migration to occur without any uncomfortable debates over the real differences between migrant and host.

Then the terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, jolted Europe into new awareness and worry.

The subsequent bombings in Madrid and London, and the murder of the Dutch filmmaker Theo van Gogh by a Dutch-born Moroccan stand as examples of the extreme. But many Europeans — even those who generally support immigration — have begun talking more bluntly about cultural differences, specifically about Muslims’ deep religious beliefs and social values, which are far more conservative than those of most Europeans on issues like women’s rights and homosexuality.
Perhaps most wrenching has been the issue of free speech and expression, and the growing fear that any criticism of Islam could provoke violence.

In France, a high school teacher went into hiding after receiving death threats for writing an article calling the Prophet Muhammad “a merciless warlord, a looter, a mass murderer of Jews and a polygamist.”
In Germany a Mozart opera with a scene of Muhammad’s severed head was canceled because of security fears.

...........but it could be said about fanatics in any religion

IMO, Islam itself isn't a threat to democracy. It is the people who misinterpret the Quran to spread violence (example, muslim extremists) are the ones that are a threat.

For example, many people list quotes from the quran such as:

"Qur'an (2:191-193) - "And slay them wherever ye find them, and drive them out of the places whence they drove you out, for persecution [of Muslims] is worse than slaughter [of non-believers]...and fight them until persecution is no more, and religion is for Allah."

This quote is about self defence, not attacking. The quran does not promote violence unless it is in self defence. Although people misinterpret it to say it spreads violence. In the Quran, the muslims were actually driven out of their homes by the pagans and the muslims wanted to protect their homes and hence this is self defence.

For example, if the above quote spreads attacking violence then you could say that Winston Churchill's quote:

"we shall fight on the seas and oceans,
we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our Island, whatever the cost may be,
we shall fight on the beaches,
we shall fight on the landing grounds,
we shall fight in the fields and in the streets,
we shall fight in the hills;
we shall never surrender"

Spreads violence, however, Winston Churchill said that quote as SELF DEFENCE not attacking.

Yep that sounds about right. Don't forget though, there are a lot of other factors. For a start, we have been sorely let down by our entire parliament with the expenses scandal , and British national identity is ebbing away. It as nothing to do with foreigners, there is no patriotism or sense of duty, there are a lot of things about america that I hate, but I have to admit you love your country regardless. Plus like in america, there is a lot of sensationalism that makes islam look evil. It is incredibly infuriating

I wouldn't worry about it though, that's probably quite a small amount of people in the survey, and we are a cynical bunch of people, even if we are predominantly socialist (including myself). I imagine a lot of those people said that purely because they are a bit repellent of religion as a whole. Britain is mostly either Agnostic or Atheist now.

I personally think it's about as dangerous as Creationism or Fundamentalism, but what do I know?

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that where ever Islam takes control there is major human rights problems, and anti western sentiment. How can 1 out of 3 people say it isn't a threat is the real question.
