Islam is not a threat any more than Judaism or Christianity is a threat. But those who believe that force should be used to make others follow their religious views are a threat. Those who believe that governments should enforce purely religious views are a threat.
In general, anyone willing to use force based on his religious views is a threat, whether those religious views are Islamic, Christian, or Wiccan.
It just so happens that there are more such people with Islamic views. I don't think this is because of any special feature of Islam. One can easily imagine (and need only look to the crusades to see) similar Chrisitian threats.

My observation from what little I know is that Islam itself is not the threat . A zealot can be hiding behind any religion ; so I think it is the militant radical fanatics hiding behind Islam that become threats . The sad thing is, innocent peaceful believers of Islam sometimes suffer discriminatory acts through no actions on their part .

Philosophies don't threaten people. Governments do. Islam is a threat to the neocons in power because Islam is a very egalitarian, non-racist, democratic approach to organizing society and that is a threat to the ruling class.

No. It's just a whipping boy for those who like to moan about society and how it's 'gone downhill'.
Yet those people are often lusting after a 50s style utopia that can never be achieved. I don't want to go back to a time when women had to give up their jobs after marrying, and chuch was compulsory on Sundays.
I can't help wondering what would have happened if the guys who flew the planes into the World Trade Centre were of a different religion. Somehow we wouldn't be at war, methinks.

I think the extremists(or fanatics) who practice Islam are the threat to everyone, everywhere.
