Is Iran's negative image largely a result of American propaganda?

OK-so we've all heard that they deny the holocaust. That is just one example of something that most of us have heard but simply do not know if it is true--it's a good example because it foments negative and even hateful feelings despite it being very likely inaccurate and misinterpreted. What do we know for sure about this country? And how can we be so sure about what we are told or what we hear? Do we just trust the Bush administration when they insist that they are a threat and that we should be afraid of them?
