Is intelligence a genetic trait or is it determined by how hard you try?

I realize you will do better if you try harder but even if say Student A and Student B put in the same amount of time and effort into something one of them will probably still do better than the other. This has been bothering me because in school we have to go to lectures about how intelligence is determined by effort. I am not trying to use this as an excuse, in fact I get very high grades and don't even try very hard. I just wanted to ask if it really is other students not trying at all which the teachers say or is it a genetic trait?
