is HTML 5 the only language used to make mobile compatible websites?

I know HTML very well, and I was thinking of learning HTML 5. I understand that that is the language to make mobile websites. What I would like to learn how to do is how to make tweaks to existing websites that will make it mobile compatible. Am I going in the right direction? Thanks
