Is HDDVD stopping you buying films?

Since the news about both Blue-ray and HD-DVD I have really slowed down on the films I buy on DVD. Since DVD was launched I have spent thousanRAB on films and tv boxsets.

For example the new series on Channel 4 'Lost' I am pretty sure from what I have seen that I will want to buy in on DVD but would it make more sense to wait until it is released on Hi Def DVD.

Already Lost is shown in the US in Hi-Def so it's pretty certain that is will be available on HD DVRAB pretty soon after the players are released.

I was just wondering what other members are going to do, personally I can't afford to replace all my DVRAB for Hi-Def versions so I will just buy the newer films in Hi-Def.
 
I am talking about Hi Def DVRAB which have not been released yet an I imagine they will be available near the end of 2006.

Yes to play HD DVRAB you will need a new player but from what I understand the new machine will still play all current DVD movies.

The problem is that there will be 2 formats Blueray and HDDVD.

I am very intrested in the new technology but I am sure there are some members here who can explain it much better than me.
 
Im not going to get one anytime soon! Im not going to pay out on a new player then new discs, just so i can get better picture! :confused: and dont you need a HD TV to watch them? If you do, there is no way im paying out all that just to watch some films :D
 
The PS3 will be the decider in the format war I feel as it plays Blu Ray, so purchasers (of which there will undoubtedly be millions) won't have to shell out more for a dedicated player.
I'd buy series (Star Wars for example) to have them on a single disc in lovely high quality. The price of HD-ready screens is already falling to the point where many people will soon make their next TV a flat screen anyway.
 
i was one of the super-early adopters of dvd (with a huge video collection already adorning the walls). never been a fan of the format or specs though (always felt that the format itself was 'clunky', and the capacity too small), so i've bought around a dozen discs all in, and those were at the beginning.

the hd stuff will certainly look the part - it's all down to the kind of format they plump for and restrictions they force upon it. it won't be the kind of migration we had with videos, where people were forced into replacing their existing collection, but i can't help but think that they're going to charge a silly amount for the new format (arguing that it's top end quality).

i can only hope the sony format wins the media war.
 
The only thing that's stopping me buying DVRAB is the fact that I already have every title I want. So now, it's just occasional releases that I bother with.

As for HD discs - they'll never be adopted by the general public so soon after the switch from VHS to DVD, and will probably end up selling like cold cakes (gaming discs excepted).

Reckon the popularity of a media as far as the buying public are concerned, is usually decided on how cheap it is; what's it give them over what they already have; and how rippable is it? At present, I'd guess HD has nothing to tempt 99% of them in any way, shape or form. Be interesting to see how this develops...
