Is happiness merely the elimination of misery?

It's clear to me that happiness would not be possible without misery. And there's no denying that everybody feels miserable at times, and feels happy when their misery is reduced for some reason.

id say the are opposites on a scale
if misery is 1 and happiness is 10 or degrees from 6 to 10 then the absence of misery is only 5.
so no the absence of misery is not happiess

happiness or knowing happiness. To know happiness you have to know misery. To be happy you don't need to know anything. You don't even have to know your happy.

You're right... to every action, there is an opposite and equal reaction.. that is not just a law of physics!

If we were not occasionally miserable or at least negative, how would we have a benchmark with which to compare our happiness? I don't believe there is a state of true neutrality in the emotions- unless it's death.
