Is going in to the film making business as hard as it is portrayed?

I want to go into the film making business, but it seems like the chances of actually going into that sector are extremely low. I really don't want to pay 40k-80k or more on college, and end up becoming unemployed and in debt.
Is going in to the film making business as hard as it is portrayed?
Statistics of going into the film making business?
Any directors or script supervisor e-mails that i can e-mail for advice?
