My contract with Rogers expires this month.

I've just received mail from Rogers announcing the soon availability of the SE Experia X10, available for $149 with a 3-year contract.

My other option, as I see it, is getting a Nexus One (which is naturally unlocked) and seeing whether Telus or Bell can beat Rogers deal (and then possibly going back to Rogers customer retention department and see what kind of deal is possible).

There are some very nice things about the X10, notably its camera and media player. But I've also read that it'll only ship with Android 1.6 and its screen is hardware-limited from doing multi-touch.

While my Rogers issues are probably best for another forum, is there anyone here who can suggest a preference between the N1 and X10? I've never bought a SE before but I've had reasonably good use from an HTC S621 (from before anyone had heard of HTC).

Tough choice, since the X10 really looks cool to me. But if you want to apply logic to this, the Nexus One has the more advanced level of Android OS and is likely to get upgrades quicker from Google itself, which can do so without carrier permission. You just probably have to pay one large sum for a non contract unlocked phone, which has its own advantages, and setting with a cheaper plan, but one that won't lock you for 3 years.

I suspect the X10 is likely to be more expensive without a contract.

The Nexus One is one beautiful one and its appearance and feel does evoke strong emotions. So does the X10. Your choice likely to evoke strong emotional feelings of gadget lust. Choosing the X10 over the N1 is more likely for me to be the emotional choice, while the N1 is the logical choice.

On the application level, Android 1.6 and 2.1 doesn't have that much of a difference. There maybe some games that has problems on 2.1. Android 2.1 has UI and aesthetic enhancements over 1.6, but then again, the X10 has the Rachel, Mediascape and Timescape UI that looks quite nice. Some people actually prefer the UI enhancements over the raw Android even if the raw Android has a higher version number. You may have to assume OS upgrades maybe slower on the X10 however, since they have to first port their UI on the new OS too.
