Is economics any use to become a accountant?

I want to be an accountant but then my mum told me that for my options I have to take economics and accounting but then I thought that they were covering the same topics so do I need to have both as my options or just accounting would do
 
i just got an associates degree in accounting. i had to take 3 economics classes. i noticed so many times that classes tie together all the time, you can take econ 101 one semester, and then it will cross with some other class the next semester. you have to have a general knowledge of it in any business major.
