I was talking to my friend at school. This one guy (who turned out to be annoying) was explaining to my friend the basic storyline of Detective Conan a.k.a. Case Closed, and my friend said that he had never heard of Detective Conan. I was really surprised and told my friend, "Are you serious? How can you NOT have heard of Detective Conan???" Then the annoying guy 'defended' my friend and said, "Well, it's not really that big of a deal. Detective Conan is not a well-known anime/manga. None of the people I know have really heard of it." (Somehow, he thought I was verbally attacking my friend when I was really just surprised and not really mad at him, so he tried to defend my friend when I didn't really mean to criticize my friend.) Then, I just stopped talking and took a backseat for the rest of the conversation. I have always thought that Detective Conan was a really popular and famous manga/anime because I have a relative in China who has watched it, it was on adult swim for some time, it (manga) is in the local library, and there are tons of forums about it online. Plus, it is in the Japanese Shounen Jump, which supposedly features "the world's most popular manga."
So, was this guy right? Is Detective Conan merely an obscure manga/anime that most anime/manga fans have never heard of? Or is this guy misinformed?
