Is denim on denim ever ok?

I recently got a cute light denim button down from the gap, and there they had it on the mannequin with a pair of darker jeans and a brown belt. My sister wore it with a dark denim miniskirt, grey tights and black booties. I've been too timid to try the outfit myself, and everyone i've asked seems to be disgusted with the idea of all denim. Im just wondering if I'm crazy, or maybe this is an up and coming trend? please help.
 
I honestly think you can wear anything as long as you do it right.denim on denim included.
you can wear something that is trendy but if you don't do it right it will look horrible.
