Is cycling this much decent exercise?

I've been riding my bike to and from school, about 6.5 miles each way. I'm already a fairly fit individual, but I don't exercise regularly (aside from this cycling). If I do this 13 mile round trip 5 days a week, should I notice some improvement in speed and stamina in a couple months?

Also, would this help my distance running ability?
