is civilization IV on the PC any good?

and is civilization IV: colonization worth a crack? M yfriend has a civilization game and told how he "set up the UN" but when my step dad played his tutorial it was like 1000BC or something stupid, does it progress quick?

I thoroughly enjoy all the Civilization games, why wouldn't you? You get to build your own empire and take down other empires! I think civ 2 is probably the best but 4 is worth a purchase if this kind of game appeals. After all Sid Meier (the mind behind the civ franchise) pretty much made the genre what it is today!
