Is Civilization 5 a good game and worth buying?

i have a mac and I'm thinking of getting it from the mac app store so is it a good strategy game? is it fun to play by yourself and with other people? is it multiplayer? is there a new version of the game coming out? Overall question is if it is a good game and NOT a waste of money.I love strategy games like age of war and stuff which was free so is this a good strategy game? is it fun? Please help.Thanks a lot
