is cinnamon coffee meant to be a sweet fix or is it meant to be bold and spicy?

the cinnamon coffee that is common at mexican restaurants
is it traditionaly prepared with a balanced amount of sugar
or is it made to show the spiciness of cinnamon
people can make it either way i suppose but which is more common
