Is chrome safe to cook on? We're getting mixed messages...?

We have an antique O'Keefe and Merrit stove with a built in griddle in between the burners. Years ago, in the very early 90's, my mom took it in to have the griddle resurfaced, and after she'd paid the man he told her that he'd used chrome, so she wouldn't be able to cook on it. But recently we've been seeing a lot of chrome cookware, so I'm wondering if the man actually knew what he was talking about, or if we could finally start cooking on it.
I'm not questioning the safety of chrome cookware--I was more wondering if it could be a different kind of chrome.
