Is chess a sport or just a game in the USA?

I wonder because it's a real sport in Russian, But I've never heard a man from "The West" calling it a sport.
I mean, what's its status?
Can I say that I'm sportsman because I seriously play chess(I'm the first-class player in Russian system)
 
It is a sport when it is played during a legitimate competition. Eg the national chess tournament
