is c++ really a joke?

I started learning programming, and I had heard of one language that gave you a lot of control and effeciency, so I went with it, but now I have read from a few places that c++ was just a joke, and that it is supposed to be hard to program in, I don't even know all of the features, but I can program in it just fine, and isn't it supposed to be backwards compatible with c?, I think it is harder to program in c than c++ to be honest
