Is Britain ready for a Black Prime Minister?

Let's refrain from the 'of course it is, let's not be racist speech', let's cultivate a discussion based on intelligent responses and opinions accepting the premise that you do not speak for the rest of Britain. I personally think it is long over due.
 
yeh, why not. i dont care if the are black, white or half-giraffe, as long as they do a better job than present.

Quite a touchy subject there... I personally think the people would eventually accept a black or ethnically-diverse Prime Minister. The question is, when will actually get there... The sparsity of ethnic minority groups (although Britain waves the "triumphant" flag of ethnic diversity) particularly in higher echeleons of society reveals how far Britain needs to go, to even consider a 'non-white' Prime Minister. I am proud of Britain, yes, but it is a fact that we still do subconsciously bias people on the basis of other traits than their personal qualities & skills. Plus, we need to merit peeps on what they can do/are capable of doing, instead of what they look like, etc.

Take for example, football. Black players still get booed on the field - and that's telling a totally different story, than what we try to portray!

Maybe we need a 'Nelson Mandela of Britain' to change all that...

But, as much as I can fathom, Britain has a long way to go before it actually happens... still too early for that kind of revolution to happen here, mate!

Yes I think it is ready, I hope it is, I think our ethnic minorities are woefully underrepresented in Parliament and this needs to change. I think many of our black community feel disenfranchised from politics and simply 'opt out' and don't really participate in the process. I think we could learn from America - their attitudes to race seem to be much more polarized than ours but despite that black people have really achieved top positions - Obama clearly being the most graphic illustration of this. In short what we really need is increased black participation and some credible black politicians.
 
You might not have noticed but this question has already been asked, more than once.

Britain is now in turmoil or should I say England led by a Scotsman. they cannot get it right even for a white PM. Labour is out - Cameron is not trusted nor liked and nobody seems to want to vote for the only party which has been speaking sense for so long, the Lib Dems. I personally would expect another woman MP before someone from a minority group but keep your eyes open these minority groups are getting bigger!
 
You should vote for the character and intelligence of the candidate, not the color of his skin. However, there are some people who are influenced by their own bigotry and ignorance. I presume this bigotry exists in other countries as well as our own.

Bigotry can involve race, gender, sexual orientation or just about any emotion or belief. It can be taught by parents or by peers. For the most part, young people in the United States are rejecting the old prejudices of their parents and the elderly, although some bigotry remains in groups like our Skinheads or those hating Gays, or men degrading women.

I have no knowledge of the situation in England, but I can guess that Middle Eastern people are struggling with the problem right now. We Americans also have many people who think that ALL Middle Easterners are terrorists. The fact that it is not true doesn't change them. Bigotry sticks to many people like glue.
 
I'm black and I couldn't really give a $hit if Britain gets a black prime minister or not. As long as the guy does the the job right
