Is blackfish (Tog) Fishing with clams the same as with green crabs?

I do alot of blackfishing but i do it in the winter. I always use crabs for bait. Im looking to do some toggin this upcoming spring. In the spring i no clams are the top bait. Is fishing with clams for tog the same as fishing with crabs. Do i have to wait for that second or third hit or do they just suck clams in and hold on? Thanks
