is being attracted to shiny things a sign of low intelligence?

for example, giant rims, nickel plated handguns, fake gold chains, gold teeth, etc.
I used to think so, but ferrets are also attracted to shiny things, and they are smarter than some people I've met, so I'm not sure where that leaves my theory. help?
