Is apple opening up their contract to t-mobile?

I really would like to get another iphone, and I recently heard a rumor that Apple's contract with AT&T is up the 1st of the year and Apple is going to release the iphone to t-mobile. Has anyone heard this as well and if so, do you have any more information on it?
