Is Andy Murray really as popular in England as the US media tells American fans?

The US broadcasters are constantly talking about how unified the UK fans are behind Murray...is this true? I know he's said a few things that weren't too kind to the English and I was watching this week when a young fan, when asked how he felt about Murray, said, "Well, he's not English, is he?" or something like that (after which the broadcast said almost nothing)
Andy Murray is a top 5 men's tennis player currently making a run at Wimbledon.

i hate how he acts like some moody hormonal teenager. but any tennis player who gets remotely big in england, we're behind them to the end (just look at tim henman!)

yes.
we lost tim henman as our 'hope' and he has been replaced by andy murray.
he has previously been a grumpy scottish git, but he's had an image overhaul and is now a bit happier.
and as he's doing so well now, he's our one hope for sporting glory! it helps he's on home turf as well.
but we english are a fickle lot - to sum up, when he's doing well, he's british, when he's not, he's 'that useless scot' :oP
