Is an iPhone still covered by AT&T if you jailbreak it?

I have an iPhone 4 and have a friend who jailbroke their iPhone. I want to also, but I heard that you lose coverage for your iPhone from AT&T if you do. Is this true? And if it is, is there a safe way to jailbreak my iPhone ?
