My friend's birthday is coming up and I want to have a shirt printed for them. The thing is I want to use this image ( http://media-2.web.britannica.com/eb-media/32/8332-004-4760F6B9.jpg ) which i've given a "sketchy" effect on photoshop, but i'm concerned with the whole copyrights issue and whatnot. I looked up for the source and all i got was "The Granger Collection, New York". I've researched the issue and i've seen it's of course illegal if i chose to resell it, but if it's a gift, is it still illegal of me to use the image? I don't know who to ask for "permission" considering what i found as the source. I'm not trying to pass it off as being mine, but i don't want to get in trouble for coming off as if i am.
Is altering a photo/image, but for no financial gain, legal?
