Is Abraham Lincoln rightly celebrated and revered for advancing the cause of democracy and equality in the United States?

I've been reading up on the Lincoln Douglas Debates and I am warring with myself over whether or not we should credit Lincoln as much as we do for the abolition of slavery.
and why do you guys think so?

I think that even though it seems like he didnt do much, i think he is represented as a great president because of how much he did during his time. It may not seem like a whole lot in todays time, but back then, it was a lot.

Yeah, just look at his before presidency and after presidency pics. He had to make lots of hard decisions during the Civil War. Not to mention, he was assasinated for doing so!

We celebrate Lincoln for what he represents, more than who he was.

He represents the preservation of our union, and the abolition of slavery. Obviously he didn't achieve those goals singlehandedly, but he lead the country through that time, and thus became the symbol of it.

Keep reading. The Union and the country as we know it, probably would not have survived without Lincoln. No one ever went against popular opinion more than him.

Even though it may not have been his ultimate goal to abolish slavery, his will and leadership and pure determination to keep the united states whole is what led to the abashment

Think of it like this you do one good thing that has multiple good results people might not even recognize the thing you set out to do but they will see the results.
