Is a toyota Celica an ok starter car?

I found a 1994 Celica with 180,000 miles for sale. It's the 1.8 liter engine, so not very fast. But it will handle great. Is it a good, SAFE choice for me as a first time driver? The other options are civics or accords of around the same year or late 90's. Would they be better (safer), and why? the safely features are all fairly comparable. (The Celica does not have ABS though).

If not, what else would be a good handling, reliable commuter car for a starting driver?

THANKS
