is a Mazda 6 a good teenage first car?

No. Definitely get an older car. They are much cheaper than a brand new 2009 model and if something goes wrong its not that big of a deal. My first car was a 1998 Mazda Protege. $3000. Very reliable, only needed the right CV axel replaced because of a cracked CV boot, but that's expected with an 11 year old car. An older, preferably foreign car (because of gas mileage) is a much better fit for a teenager's first car.

Unless you're ready to spend a good 15 grand on a car that's bound to get damaged over and over.

Best car for teenager is a beater for under $2000. Trust me. The car will have multiple scratches and dents in no time with teenage driving. After 5 years of driving, so over 21yo, maybe consider something a little better. Cars are just money pits, insurance, gas, repairs, depreciation etc etc. For teens the cheaper the car the better, at least in the beginning.
