Is a Marineland Eclipse 6 an okay home for a betta fish?

I bought this tank thinking it would make a happy home for a betta but my poor fish died within a week of fin rot. Before I get another betta fish for this tank I would like to know if it was the tank that made my fish unhappy. I had a heater in the tank as well as filtration so I'm not sure why it died. I would appreciate any help I could get. Thanks!
 
Did you cycle the tank? If not, that's why the Betta got fin rot and died, water quality issues as the tank started to go through the nitrogen cycle. Bettas are not actually that hardy and won't do well through an ammonia spike.

There's a lot more to setting up a tank than filling it with water and plugging it all in. Have a read of these:
