Is a liberal arts major a good idea?

I feel a lot of pressure to do a more practical major, but I dont really know what I want to do with my life. I could ultimately see myself working in government, education, editing/writing, or even working in the hospitality industry. Ive been thinking about majoring in philosphy, but Im nervous about what kind of life that will set me up for. Can anyone give me some words of wisdom?
 
In a perfect world, everyone would get a liberal arts degree before pursuing some practical career degree. Unfortunately, resources and time are limited so you have to make a practical career preparation choice up front. There are few jobs for Philisophy majors.

My view is that a student can always go back to school for liberal arts courses — maybe even make a credible Master's out of it.
