Is a lawyer required by law to give copies of documentation/work they did in

the past for a client? I paid a lawyer draft a partnership joint venture agreement for myself and some partners of mine in 2004. Since then, these partners have bailed. The original partnership agreement I have is missing a page, a very important page dealing with default provisions of the parties in the agreement. I have been trying to get the original complete documentation from the lawyer who drafted it. He has acknowledged having it, but is brushing me off with regard to giving it to me. I need this documentation to see if I have any recourse with my now ex-partners. Is the lawyer required by law to give the documentation to me if I request it?

Also, do I have any recourse if he changes his mind to get me off his back and says he was wrong, and does not have the documentation anymore? Is there a certain time frame lawyers are required to keep documentation of past clients work on file for?
