Is a landlord required by law to provide a new mattress to a new tenant?

I live in the UK and I have now rented a property through my university with two of my friends.

We all have double beds, but the problem is that while their mattress's are OK, mine is unbearably hard and thebed framee is extremely old and creaky.

The mattress isn't just hard - it says on the label it is "Very Firm". It is beyond anything I have ever felt and I cannot sleep on it at all - I've had to come back home just to get some sleep. It doesn't help that I have scoliosis (curve in my spine) and this is giving me constant backache.

I have asked the woman to provide me with one, but she says because I didn't inform the university of my condition when I moved in, I can't have one. Oh, and she "can't afford one" anyway, even though each of us are paying her almost £100 a week.

Can someone let me know whether I have any rights in this area? I have purchased mattress toppers but they really don't help. Thanks

Did you inform her of your condition when agreeing to be her tenant?

If not, then how is she supposed to have known about your requirements?
