Is a harley davidson sportster a good first car?

No. They are different animals. A Sportster is a very good second car, unless you like freezing rain and no visibility in the winter.
 
no, it's not a good starter bike. If you are learning to ride a get a bike you wont mind tipping over. Something that doesnt have enough power to get you into serious trouble. Start with a 350 or 500 and take some classes. then work your way up as your skills improve. It should be an ugly upright so you dont go picturing yourself on a Harley as some Hells Angel badass or on a japanese bullet bike as some sort of rodney road racer. See yourself as someone learning to ride and stay alive.
Too damn many kids buy ninjas and katanas and hayabusas and wind up dead in a month becdause they dont have the skill to ride them or the smarts to respect them.
 
No motorcycle is a good for a first or only vehicle. Extremely unsafe, inconvenient for nearly every aspect of transporation, and virtually useless for the average things you expect transporation to perform. Get a cheap 4 wheel vehicle first and decide to kill yourself on a motorcycle later.
