Is a Google Phone (Tmobile G1) not worth it if I don't get the plan?

Hey there! So I have an iPhone, and I dont have an internet plan (EDGE) for it. However, it has wifi, so whenever I need to use the internet, I just wait until i get home, or go to starbucks. I use my iphone for mainly calling and texting. So anyways, I was thinking about getting the G1, but I was wondering if it was like not worth it if I didn't get the plan for it? I can't afford getting the phone AND the plan.
