Basically the difference in marine to land engines are the cooling systems and flywheels
So if you have a 2.5 GM 4 cyl engine that has standard spark ignition system you could use that system on an engine which is a 2.5 GM 4 cyl auto
The cars system may not be so easy to "get round" as there are things like the EMS engine management system or some times called ECU engine control unit this has probes which sense things like exhaust gas engine temps oil pressures speed of the flywheel and alter the ignition and fuel accordingly if you take some of those things away then the others sense a fault and all sorts of things happen you may not have fuel because it could turn OFF the fuel pump it may not change from cold start /cold run to normal fuel air mix then your engine floods and stops it may put lights on in the dash panel and then switch the ECU to safe mode and limit the engine speed 30 MPH in top gear.
Just to bear these things in mind
