Is a gear automatic more fuel efficient than a manual car?

I am pretty much comparing two identical cars with similar engine sizes but with different transmissions. I know this also depends on how you drive, but assuming that one does drive eco- friendly which would be most economical ? I would assume a manual as the driver would be in control of the gears, etc. I am not quite sure though..

Any suggestions ??
