Is a customer's dining experience enhanced by upselling?

I just got a job as a waiter, at a moderately expensive mexican restaurant. I have worked as a waiter a couple of years ago, and I think I give pretty good service, but I absolutely suck at selling. The managers at the restaurant insist that a guest's dining experience is dramatically enhanced by selling them $9 margaritas, and $24 "featured" plates. I personally think that if someone comes in with the intention of spending $9 on a margarita, and $24 on an entree, they are going to do it regardless of whether I suggest them or not.

What is everybodys take on that pushy waiter/waitress trying to enhance the rate at which your wallet loses weight?
