Is a car starter specific to a make and model year even if the engine is the same size?

This is most likely a stupid question but here goes.

I own a 1999 pontiac grand am that need a little work to get it on the road. I also own a 1996 pontiac sunfire that recently lost the ability to start. I pulled the starter and tested it and it turned out it was bad. I knew it was going bad for a while but I was waiting until it crapped out for sure. Well yesterday it finally died and the bendex would only turn the flywheel for a split second then free spin with out engaging. I pulled the starter from the Grand Am and put it into the sunfire (same 2.4L DOHC) but all it does is turns the motor over but it never fires up....

So whats the deal?? Even though the grand am starter turns the sunfire flywheel do I need a specific 1996 sunfire starter to get it to start and run???

P.S. The grand am starter was smaller in size but it bolted right up and fits in the tranny housing just right..
