Is a .38 special snubnose revolver a good home defense weapon?

This gun is a Taurus model 85 revolver with exposed hammer.
I told you what I am using it for---Home Defense.

I have given this same gun to several family members when they decided that they needed a gun

It is also one of the guns I use on a regular basis
 
yes nit is but id recommend if you really wanna do some damage if someone gets in your house i would reccoment a 45 pistol with hollow points
 
The gun that all cops carried in the '60s can't be all bad.

Just be sure to practice with it as you will find that hitting your target can be difficult.
 
It has done the job on many occasions, and it hasn't been all that many years ago that it was the preferred law enforcement and military caliber for numerous nations and countless communities until more efficient calibers came along. For the purpose you have described, I would look for a similar size and priced revolver that shoots .357 magnum bullets with a bit more wallop where and when needed most. That caliber of revolver will ALSO accept the less costly .38 Special rounds for target practice, unlike the Taurus revolver you described which is ONLY .38 Special and will NOT accept the .357. Good luck and stay safe. I hope you never have to use it for defense!
 
Actually the caliber is a good defensive round but I would buy a .357 magnum. You can shoot both .357s and .38 specials.

I would get the 4" due to recoil. Even a .38 snub by has a lot of recoil.

But if you have your heart on the 85 it will do the job.

I am not sure how much experience you have with firearms but it never hurts to take a safety course and even a defensive pistol course. Anyway, good luck and congrats on choosing not to be a victim
 
You'd better practice and make your shot count because a lot of criminals use 9 MM or larger guns and even semi-autos like Mac 10's.
A shotgun is better because the spread pattern is more lethal at close range.
And never forget that if you pull the gun you'd better use it or you could get shot.

No it's not. A simple alarm should do the trick, as would yelling "honey, get my gun!"

The notion that you need a gun to protect your house is ridiculous unless you live in Cambodia or Cabrini Green. How many people do you know who "saved their house" by using a gun? How many people do you know who would have been alive today if they only had a gun?
You shouldn't worry about defending your home. Worry about keeping you and your family safe by keeping the gun out of the house.

And pretending works. Why would a criminal call your bluff when he can just go to the next block? What if you're not home and he breaks in and steals your gun, uses it to kill somebody, and then dumps the gun? Guess who that gun gets traced back to?
Forget the machismo "hoo-rah" BS. The homeowner's gun doesn't protect s***. Ever.
 
Any gun is better than no gun. A .38 has much more stopping power than a .22, but not as much as a .45.

I prefer my Winchester Defender short-barrel shotgun.

Unless you carry your sidearm around the house with you, (and how many do that?), you're going to have to get the weapon and have it ready to fire, and in the time it takes to do that, you might as well grab something that no intruder is going to walk away from, and that's a shotgun.
