I originally was against a Sportster as I thought it was more like one of those Japanese bikes than a traditional Harley. One thing I was concerned about was the sound...
But I digress, I'm most likely going to get a car before I get a bike, but my mom said I could get one (with my own money). I was originally jumping the gun a bit a trying to go straight for one of those 500 pound monsters (exaggeration?), but I was quickly told that's a terrible idea, and that a Sportster is a good first bike. Of course, I only heard this from one person, and I'd like to hear from some more riders rather than people who are just going to tell me that a teen driver plus a motorcycle is a missile waiting to happen, or something like that...
