Is a 1997 Jeep Cherokee a good first car?

I'm really interested in getting a '97 Jeep Cherokee for $2,800 with 110,000 miles on it. I'm planning on getting it checked out by a mechanic though. So how good of a first car are Jeeps?

Would you consider them safe, reliable, and easy to drive?
 
They are safe and somewhat reliable. They are known for transfer case problems though, so make sure to have it checked out well before purchasing.
 
they weren't good when they were new let alone with 110k on them and shouldn't even be considered as a second car if your looking for something reliable
