Is a 1980's Jeep Cherokee a good car for a new driver?

I should be getting my license soon. Even though I have only had my permit for a little while, I've driven lots of different cars, ranging from a Nissan Sentra to a BMW 528 E-series to a Ford F350. I'm capable of driving a standard, but it's been a while, so I'd have to practice a bit before I could do it again (the Jeep is automatic, anyway). Even though parallel parking isn't on the test anymore, Dad made me learn. I haven't done it much, though. The car my dad drives (and most of my experience has been in) is a /Chevy S10 Blazer. I feel really comfortable behind the wheel of it because it isn't too small or too big, and is very maneuverable. We were looking at a Jeep Cherokee (not a Grand Cherokee). It seems to be about the same size as the Blazer, but I've never driven a Jeep, and that one needs work, so I couldn't. How does it handle? Would it be a good car for me? A friend of mine has a newer one, so if all else fails I could ask her, but they're bound to handle different.
Anyway, just tell me your opinions.
