Is 30% CPU usage for a program like Windows Media Player or Firefox normal?

1) My computer has been freezing up lately (usually on Firefox and Windows Explorer) and I am wondering if I have a virus or not. I have Microsoft Security Essentials and scanned the computer but nothing came up. I looked at the CPU and realized that whenever there was a freeze up, the CPU was at 100%. Also, normally, my each application like Media Player takes up 30% (so 2 take up 60%). Is this the normal rate or should I be worried. Also, Mozilla Firefox tends to use like 15% but then when you search or move sites (perform action), it can spike to 40-70% for an instant. Is that normal? Is Firefox known to use a lot of CPU?

How can I tell if my CPU is being used up because of a virus? Do scan programs often miss out on viruses? Is it normal for a computer to get slower after only 5 months of normal use? Or did I do something wrong?

2) If I don't shut down my computer and only keep it in standby for weeks at a time, does that usually slow my computer down and hurt it?

Also a second computer question
